He sat handcuffed in an orange jumpsuit as Stark County Common Pleas Court Judge John Haas, who is retiring at the end of the year and will oversee Mason’s case as a visiting judge, set his bond at $5 million.Haas appointed well-known Cleveland defense lawyers Tom Shaughnessy and Kevin Spellacy to represent Mason, who did not hire his own lawyer.Tuesday’s hearing was Mason’s first appearance in court since a grand jury handed up a six-count indictment charging the 51-year-old Mason in the fatal Nov. 17 attack. She called 911 and told dispatchers that Mason stabbed Fraser Mason, and said she could hear the woman screaming outside. The children were screaming in the background and Mason walked inside and said “I’m so sorry,” according to the recording.Fraser Mason, 45, was a beloved sixth-grade teacher at Woodbury Elementary School in Shaker Heights.Mason is a former state lawmaker and Cuyahoga County judge who left the bench in 2015 after he was convicted of brutalizing his wife in front of their children in an attack that left her in need of facial reconstruction surgery.In that incident, Mason slammed Fraser Mason’s head against the dashboard and window of their SUV, then chased her when she got out of the car, struck her again and bit her.
